Description:

Cancer Australia is inviting partnerships that involve Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander-led organisations collaborating with research groups and mainstream health services, working closely with communities.

The objectives of the grant program are to:

  • strengthen cancer research to improve Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health
  • build the capacity of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander research sector now and into the future, including through mentorship and leadership opportunities
  • elevate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander-led research, Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander leadership, genuine co-design, co-authorship, collaboration, and partnerships
  • empower and enable Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander frameworks, research methodologies, and data sovereignty
  • elevate community-driven research and the culturally safe inclusion of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander consumers, families, and communities in cancer research.

Up to 12 grants will be awarded over a maximum 3-year grant period commencing in June 2025.

In alignment with priority actions in the Australian Cancer Plan and the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Cancer Plan, funded projects will support translational, community-based cancer research to improve Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Health in at least one of the following areas:

  • prevention and early detection
  • access to cancer care
  • patient experiences and outcomes from diagnosis through to survivorship.

This grant opportunity is being partially administered by NHMRC on behalf of Cancer Australia.

Eligibility:

To apply for the grant, applicants will need to:

  • be an Administering Institution approved by NHMRC.
  • demonstrate an existing or new relationship between organisations that will work in partnership with community to deliver the research activities, and includes: 
    • at least one Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander-led organisation and at least one mainstream organisation (including cancer services and/or research organisations), OR 
    • two or more Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander-led organisations.
  • develop relevant capability and capacity of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cancer research workforce by proposing research that:
    • is led or co-led (i.e. Chief Investigator A or B) by an Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander researcher, AND
    • includes Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people with cultural, community, or clinical responsibilities, within the research team.

$9,600,000.00

Estimated Grant Value (AUD):

From $800,000.00 to $2,500,000.00
