The NHMRC-NIHR Collaborative Research Grant Scheme 2022 supports Australian participation and collaboration in leading international collaborative research through the United Kingdom’s National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Health Technology Assessment (HTA) Programme. The HTA Programme funds independent research about the effectiveness, costs and broader impact of healthcare treatments and tests.
NHMRC will invite Australian researchers who are listed on the successful applications submitted during Stage 1 to apply for NHMRC support of the Australian component of the research under the following topics:
- 22/85 Positive airway pressure therapy in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease-obstructive sleep apnoea overlap syndrome
- 22/87 Nebulised antibiotics as prophylaxis against respiratory tract infection in the first year after tracheotomy or laryngectomy
- 22/90 Self-care of children and young people with neurodisability
- 22/91 Rescue packs in chronic obstructive pulmonary disease
- 22/92 Withdrawing long term macrolides in bronchiectasis
- 22/93 The clinical and cost-effectiveness of colesevelam for the treatment of bile acid diarrhoea
- 22/94 Optimal management of perianal Crohn’s disease

Applications will only be accepted from NHMRC approved Administering Institutions. A list of NHMRC approved Administering Institutions is available at:

Applications must satisfy all the requirements set out in the NHMRC-NIHR Collaborative Research Grant Scheme 2022 Grant Guidelines.

Applications must be made to and approved through the NIHR HTA Programme review process to be eligible for funding from NHMRC.
Applications are only required to be submitted to NHMRC if a Stage 1 submission has progressed to the Stage 2 application. The Australian Chief Investigator A (CIA) must forward evidence of invitation to submit a Stage 2 application, with their NHMRC application, to the NHMRC by the advertised closing date and time.
Applications must be submitted electronically using NHMRC’s online Grants Management System (Sapphire) unless otherwise advised by NHMRC.
A complete NHMRC-NIHR Scheme Application must consist of the following:
- Completion of the relevant sections of the application form;
- The relevant information in the applicants Sapphire Profile; and
- A copy of the Proposal submitted to the NIHR and evidence of invitation to submit a Stage 2 application.
The NHMRC funding allocation will be distributed to successful NHMRC-NIHR Collaborative Research Grant Scheme 2022 grants until the $3 million funding allocation is exhausted.
