2021-22 Export Market Development Grants
Austrade’s Export Market Development Grants (EMDG) program helps Australian businesses grow their exports in international markets. These grants encourage small to medium enterprises (SME) to market and promote their goods and services globally by providing matched funding for eligible promotional activities. They also assist representative bodies promote their SME members exports to overseas markets and train their members to be export ready.
Types of grants for exporters
Small to medium enterprise exporters can apply for a matched funding grant to assist with promotional expenses.
Three different types of grants (called Tiers) are available. Each tier provides a different level of support for SMEs as reflecting the different stages of an exporter’s journey.
Over the lifetime of engagement with this grant program SMEs may be eligible for 8 years of grants or a maximum of $770,000.
Tier 1 Ready to export:
First time exporters – 2 years and maximum $40,000 per financial year.
Tier 2 Expanding:
Expanding export promotion activities – 3 years and maximum $80,000 per financial year.
Tier 3 Expanding and strategic shift:
Expanding export promotion activities and making a strategic shift, for example targeting a new market or a new type of customer – 3 years and maximum $150,000 per financial year.
Grants for representative bodies:
Assistance for industry bodies and alliances (representative bodies) extends to training members who are new to export to become export ready. Representative bodies will continue to have access to financial assistance for promotional activities on behalf of their members in international markets, with grants of up to 3 years and up to $150,000 per financial year.
To be eligible for a grant under the EMDG program, you will need to be an Australian person and have eligible products and expenses as defined in the EMDG Rules. The EMDG Guidelines provide a plain English description of the requirements for your eligibility.
To be eligible:
- you need to have a turnover of less than $20 million for financial year 2020–21
- you must be an Australian person within the meaning of the EMDG Rules
- you must have an Australian Business Number.
EMDG grant funds must be used for promotional activities to market eligible products in foreign countries, or for training activities to develop skills in such marketing. To be an eligible product, your product(s) must be of substantially Australian origin and be:
- goods
- services
- events
- intellectual property or know-how
- software.
Grant applications can only be submitted through our online system at emdg.austrade.gov.au/login by 5:00 pm, 30 November 2021 (AEDT). You will need to register your details to access the grant application.

To apply you must:
- have a myGovID
- complete the online grant application form via the ‘Apply for EMDG’ link from 9:00 am AEST 16 August 2021
- provide all the information requested
- address and meet all eligibility criteria – see Eligibility sections 4, 5 and 6 in the EMDG Guidelines
- include all necessary attachments – How to apply, section 7 in the EMDG Guidelines
- submit your online application by the closing date: 5:00 pm AEDT on 30 November 2021.
