The Australian Government announced funding to establish and deliver the First Nations Health Worker Traineeship Program in the October 2022-23 Federal Budget. The delivery of the program will commence in 2023-24 for a four-year period, preceded by the establishment phase commencing in 2022-23.

The Traineeship Program will train up to 500 First Nations health workers to help ease the pressure on strained health services for First Nations communities. Increasing the number of First Nations health workers and practitioners will ensure effective and culturally safe delivery of health care to First Nations people.

The objectives of the grant opportunity are:

• to support up to 500 First Nations trainees undertake Certificate III or IV accredited training as Aboriginal health workers or practitioners;

• facilitate quality on-the-job placements in Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services (ACCHS); and

• provide mentoring and wrap around services to the trainees.

The intended outcomes of the grant opportunity are to:

• to strengthen the capacity of the health workforce by facilitating the supply of health professionals, support health professionals and students who are Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders; and

• address health workforce shortages in regional, rural and remote Australia.
