National Justice Reinvestment Program – Round 2 Assessment Cycle 2
The Australian Government is inviting applications by an open non-competitive process to deliver justice reinvestment initiatives.
Assessment Cycle 2 is open from 10 May to 10 September 2024.
Funding is from 2024–25 to 2026–27 for place-based community-led justice reinvestment initiatives. Funding for the National Justice Reinvestment Program is ongoing.
The objective is to:
- support the development and delivery of community and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander-led justice reinvestment initiatives across Australia, supporting:
- the development, implementation, and evaluation of local justice reinvestment strategies and activities
- local project teams and leadership structures to undertake the work to develop, implement and evaluate justice reinvestment strategies.
The intended outcomes of this grant opportunity are:
- Improving justice outcomes and reducing contact with the criminal justice system and incarceration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander adults and young people, in line with Closing the Gap Targets 10 and 11.
- Contributing to systemic reform of government systems that intersect with the justice system.
- Contributing to building a strong and sustainable Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander community-controlled sector delivering high quality services to meet the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people across the country.
A Resource Hub webpage has been developed to share First Nations peoples ideas, experiences and expertise in designing and implementing justice reinvestment in their communities. Resources include videos about justice reinvestment, templates, quick guides, practical toolkits and case studies.

The National Justice Reinvestment Program draws upon the strength and knowledge of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities. Programs that are eligible must demonstrate how the work is place-based, meaning how it will centre on the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait people living in your community, including by demonstrating you have support and authority to lead or act as the coordinating body for this work within a community, and that the work will be delivered in partnership with community members.
Community-led First Nations initiatives across Australian states and territories may apply for funding through the National Justice Reinvestment Program.
Closing date - 9:00 pm AEST on 10 September 2024
Assessment of applications - by 23 December 2024
Approval of outcomes following grants selection process - by 3 February 2025
Notification to applicants - by 12 February 2025
Negotiations and award of grant agreements - by 5 March 2025
Earliest start date of grant activity - April 2025
End date of grant activity - 30 June 2027 at the latest, based on your grant agreement.
