Background

UKRI-NHMRC Built Environment and Prevention Research Scheme will support Australian participation and collaboration in world-leading prevention research seeking to address the shared burden of non-communicable diseases influenced by the built environment. 

The collaborative research projects will aim to generate evidence that can be translated into actionable, sustainable and cost-effective ways of preventing NCDs, to improve population health and reduce health inequalities in the UK and Australia.

Research grants under this call can be up to three years in duration and will start in April 2020.

Eligible Topics

The areas listed below are given as examples of aspects of the built environment in which multi-disciplinary research proposals are welcomed:

• urban planning and regeneration
• city design, including increasing conditions that promote health such as ‘active travel’ and access to green space
• housing
• transportation systems
• air quality, both indoor and outdoor, and noise 
• the indoor environment
• neighbourhood diversity, including social regeneration and social cohesion, and access to health services
• the relationship between the built environment, extreme weather events, and their impact on health

Proposals need not be restricted to the examples cited as applications across the breadth the built environment are encouraged.

Applications will only be accepted from NHMRC-approved Administering Institutions. A list of NHMRC-approved Administering Institutions and NHMRC’s Administering Institution policy are available on NHMRC’s website.

Applications must satisfy all the requirements set out in the UKRI-NHMRC Built Environment and Prevention Research Scheme 2019 Grant Opportunity Guidelines.

Applications will be excluded from consideration if the following eligibility requirements are not met:

• A research project must consist of Australian researchers collaborating with a research team from the UK involved in the call.
• Proposals must seek to generate research outcomes relevant to the prevention of NCDs in the context of the built environment in the UK and Australia.
• Submission of the compulsory Intention to Submit form. This is a compulsory stage and a full application will not be considered if an Intention to Submit is not provided.

$4,000,000.00

Applications must be submitted electronically using NHMRC’s online Research Grants Management System (RGMS) unless otherwise advised by NHMRC.

A complete UKRI-NHMRC Built Environment and Prevention Research Scheme application must consist of the following:

• Completion of Parts A and B of the application form;
• The relevant information in the applicants RGMS Profile;
• The uploaded PDF document containing your Research Proposal for Indigenous Research Excellence Criteria (if applicable); and
• A PDF copy of the full application. (The full application is a copy of the full electronic application submitted to the UKRI’s MRC by the UK Principal Investigator of the collaborative project.)

UK Principal Investigator must submit the Intention to Submit on behalf of the research collaboration to the UKRI’s MRC by 23:00 BST 17 September 2019.

Value of individual grants will be pro rata based on the number of successful applications. It is expected that this funding will support approximately five projects subject to scientific quality.
