Applications must address the objectives and desired outcomes described in section 1.3 of the Grant Opportunity Guidelines.
Applications to this grant opportunity must propose research that addresses one of the four Streams of research. An application may be submitted to one of the four Streams only.
The objective of this grant opportunity is addressed in the following four Streams:
Rare Cancers, Rare Diseases and Unmet Need
- Stream 1 – conduct a pilot study to assess the feasibility of a new clinical trial for one or more treatments and/or management strategies for a rare cancer, rare disease and/or unmet need.
- Stream 2 – conduct a clinical trial of one or more treatments and/or management-based interventions for rare cancers, rare diseases and/or unmet need.
Effective health interventions
- Stream 3 – conduct a clinical trial that assesses the comparative effectiveness of two or more health interventions to treat a specific clinical condition, to inform the decisions of policy makers, clinicians, and consumers regarding healthcare and to minimise the use of unnecessary, ineffective, and harmful health interventions.
- Stream 4 - conduct an implementation science trial to identify scalable strategies for reducing the provision of low value care.
This grant opportunity is being administered by NHMRC on behalf of the Australian Government Department of Health and Aged Care.

Applications will only be accepted from NHMRC approved MRFF Eligible Organisations. A list of NHMRC approved MRFF Eligible Organisations is available from the GrantConnect GO Documents and from the MRFF Eligible Organisations Institutions list on the NHMRC website.
Applications must satisfy all the requirements set out in the Medical Research Future Fund (MRFF) 2023 Clinical Trials Activity Grant Opportunity Guidelines.
The maximum grant period that can be applied for in each Stream is as follows:
- Stream 1: 2 years
- Streams 2 to 4: 5 years
$65,000,000.00
From $0.00 to $5,000,000.00
Applicants are advised to read the Grant Opportunity Guidelines thoroughly and liaise with the MRFF Eligible Organisation that will submit the application to identify any specific requirements that the organisation might have.
Applications must be submitted electronically using NHMRC’s online granting system (Sapphire).
Minimum Data closes at 5:00 pm (ACT Local Time) on 1 May 2024.
Questions should be submitted no later than 1:00 pm (ACT Local Time) on 22 May 2024.
