National Bench Book on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and the Legal System Program
The Australian Government is inviting one organisation via a closed non-competitive process to apply to deliver services under the Justice Services Program - National Bench Book on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and the Legal System from 2021–22 to 2023–24. The Australian Government is providing up to $642,000 over 3 years for this grant opportunity.
The National Bench Book on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples and the Legal System (the Bench Book) will be a practical and readily-accessible resource for judicial offers and legal professionals providing justice and legal assistance services to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the criminal and civil justice systems.
The primary purpose of the Bench Book is to assist in addressing the over-representation of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples in the criminal justice system in the States and Territories. However, it will have a broader focus and, subject to stakeholder consultation, will cover but may not be limited to:
- relevant background information including in relation to previous reports and inquiries, and legal definitions
- aspects of traditional Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australia
- aspects of contemporary Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australia
- language and communication issues

- criminal proceedings
- sentencing
- legal practice issues.
