The Australian Government has announced a total of $10 million (GST exclusive) in grants to support the provision of public interest journalism in regional Australia.
The objective for this stream of the Journalist Fund is to support regional media organisations to hire new cadet journalists. A subsequent training stream will be released focusing on upskilling existing regional journalists.
To be eligible to apply for a grant under this Grant Opportunity you must:
- have an Australian Business Number (ABN)
- be registered for the purposes of GST
- be an eligible regional media organisation
- be located in a regional area of Australia
- provide core news content (as defined in section 52A of the Competition and Consumer Act 2010) to local communities, including the production and distribution of local news
- have an annual average turnover of more than $150,000, but less than $30 million, for the three years prior to the lodgement of the application.
- corporation incorporated under the Corporations (Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander) Act 2006, with media content distribution as a primary purpose

For Stream 1, the grant activity is expected to be conducted for the duration of the two year period that the cadetship is undertaken. For stream 2, the grant activity is expected to be completed no later than 12 months after the execution of the grant funding agreement.

Guidelines are now available for the Cadetships stream. Applications will open on 21 March 2022 and close on 20 April 2022 and must be lodged through SmartyGrants, which can be accessed via: Journalist Fund: Cadetship Stream 2022 - Content Division (smartygrants.com.au)
