Description:

The purpose of this grant opportunity is to support delivery of the World Masters Games 2029 and was announced as part of the 2023-24 Budget.

The grant opportunity contributes to the achievement of the program, which aims to increase participation in sport and physical activity, foster excellence in high-performance, support the Australian sport sector, and coordinate Commonwealth involvement in major international sporting events.

The World Masters Games is traditionally held every four years and remains one of the largest mass participation events in the world, with an estimated 35,000 athletes to compete in the 2029 edition. The event offers community and participant social benefits by bringing people together through shared sporting interests, inclusive camaraderie and fostering cultural exchange. It will play a critical role in promoting healthy and active lifestyles amongst both older Australians and the broader community.

The objectives of the grant opportunity are to:

  • establish processes, systems, workforce, governance structures and frameworks that will underpin planning for the World Masters Games 2029, and
  • support the delivery of the World Masters Games 2029.

The intended outcomes of the grant opportunity are to:

  • use the World Masters Games 2029 a vehicle to leverage growth opportunities in areas including tourism, health, employment, social and cultural benefits, sporting excellence, and international engagement
  • enhance Australia’s reputation as a premier host of major international events, and a leading destination for sport, tourism, business and investment, and
  • drive participation, inclusion and gender equality within the sporting and broader Australian community.

To be eligible, you must be the listed organisation and have received an invitation to apply from the department.

The Confederation of Australian Sport has been awarded hosting rights by the International Masters Games Association to deliver the World Masters Games 2029. The Confederation of Australian Sport has been invited to apply for this grant opportunity as it is the only organisation with the rights and capability to deliver the World Masters Games 2029 and deliver on the intended objectives of the grant opportunity.

$16,300,000.00
