National Intelligence Post-Doctoral Grants
The National Intelligence Post-Doctoral Grant (NIPG) program sponsors unclassified academic research designed to achieve Australian Government objectives for research and innovation in national intelligence and security.
The program offers funding for Post-Doctoral Research Fellow positions for early-mid career researchers to undertake academic research in relation to Research Problems – specific areas of interest and relevance to the National Intelligence Community (NIC). This round of the program has 25 Research Topics (see document 2.). The program will run annually with each position funded full time for a period of two (2) years or part time where approved by ONI for a period of up to four (4) years. The Grant will be paid in a single instalment (up to $365,000 GST Exclusive) by ONI before the end of the 2023-2024 Financial Year (see Section 10 in the Grant Guidelines).
To be eligible the postdoctoral candidate must:
- Be an Australian citizen, Australian permanent resident or New Zealand Special Category Visa Holder,
- Have a PhD in a relevant field, conferred before the beginning of the post-doctoral position and within ten years of the application closing date (Career Interruptions will be considered),
- Post-doctoral Candidates and their proposed research must be sponsored by an accredited Australian University.
To be eligible the Research Advisor must:
- Must be engaged as a full-time staff member of the sponsoring accredited Australian University.
The maximum grant period is two (2) years for full time and up to four (4) years part time (where requested and agreed to by ONI) following the commencement date and your grant activity (i.e. your research) must be completed within this period.
Part time requests will only be approved for the following reasons:
- Carer/family responsibilities up to 0.5 FTE (four-year grant period).
- Teaching appointment in a field relevant to the NIPG project up to 0.33 FTE (three-year grant period).

- NIPG Research Advisor Confirmation of Commitment.
- NIPG University Commitment for Sponsored Research.
