Indigenous Health Workforce Traineeship (IHWT) Program
The Indigenous Health Workforce Traineeship (IHWT) program is a component of the Health Workforce Program. The IHWT program supports the Australian Government’s coordinated efforts to improve First Nations health outcomes by ensuring that First Nations people have access to culturally appropriate health care services. The IHWT program aims to ensure that the health workforce providing these services has the capability and skills to meet the health care needs of First Nations people.
The IHWT program aligns with the National Agreement on Closing the Gap and recognises that self-determination, partnership, and shared decision making as the best way to close the gap in health outcomes for First Nations people.
The Australian Government is providing a total of $11.553 million (GST exclusive) over three financial years from 2024-25 for the IHWT program.

One of the key roles that they play is to ensure that Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Services are accessible, sustainable, have a skilled workforce, meet the health needs, and aspirations of First Nations people.
