Description:

The Torres Strait and Northern Peninsula Area Climate Resilience Grant Program (the program) is a component of achieving the goals of the Torres Strait and Northern Peninsula Area Climate Resilience Centre. The program will provide funding to eligible organisations to employ First Nations Climate Resilience Officers and/or deliver a climate adaptation project in the Torres and Endeavour Straits and Northern Peninsula Area region.

The program will run over four financial years from 2024-25 to 2027-28 with projects lasting up to 3 years.

The objectives of the program are to:

  • build the capability and capacity of people and institutions in the Torres and Endeavour Straits and Northern Peninsula Area region to respond to climate change
  • as called for by Traditional Owners, create an enduring dialogue on climate change in the region across all levels of government to provide a consistent and coordinated response to climate change
  • promote the integration of Traditional Knowledges with western science, to ensure climate adaptation solutions and community education on climate matters are culturally appropriate and place based.

The intended outcomes of the program are:

  • employed First Nations Climate Resilience Officers delivering climate adaptation projects. The Climate Resilience Officers will have received culturally appropriate training and qualifications and be supported by a regionally based Program Coordinator
  • a co-ordinated regional approach to climate adaptation, on-ground climate adaptation solutions and community education on climate matters
  • improved community knowledge and engagement on climate change and climate adaptation matters
  • implemented solutions to build climate resilience and address climate change impacts in the Torres and Endeavour Straits and Northern Peninsula Area region
  • Indigenous Cultural and Intellectual Property (ICIP) rights and Indigenous data sovereignty are protected.
Eligibility:

To be eligible you must be one of the listed organisations below.

Stream One

Organisations with the primary geographical remit in the Torres and Endeavor Straits Region. Applicants that are invited to apply under Stream One are:

  • Gur A Baradharaw Kod Torres Strait Sea and Land Council Torres Strait Islander and Aboriginal Corporation (GBK), ABN 37 621 621 963
  • Torres Shire Council (TSC), ABN 34 108 162 398
  • Torres Strait Island Regional Council (TSIRC), ABN 15 292 645 165.

Stream Two

Organisations with the primary geographical remit in the Northern Peninsula Area Region. Applicants that are invited to apply under Stream Two are:

  • Apudthama Agay Aboriginal Corporation, ABN 43 885 157 834
  • Ipima Ikaya Aboriginal Corporation RNTBC, ABN 84 342 325 237
  • Northern Peninsula Area Regional Council (NPARC), ABN 27 853 926 592.
