National Roadmap for Skin Cancer Screening
This grant opportunity will support the development of a roadmap for a national targeted skin cancer screening program, in line with priorities of the Australian Cancer Plan.
Australia has the highest rate of skin cancer in the world. Two in three Australians will be diagnosed with skin cancer in their lifetime, making it the most common cancer nationally. Of those diagnosed with skin cancer, approximately 1-2% (or 18,257 people in 2023) will be diagnosed with invasive melanoma, the most lethal form of skin cancer.
Early detection is critical for reducing the overall burden of melanoma, with survival strongly linked to early diagnosis. However, access to timely, effective, and affordable skin checks to detect skin cancer is limited. While there is currently insufficient evidence to support population-wide screening for skin cancer, there is emerging evidence to support targeted screening of people at high risk.

To be eligible, you must be one of the listed organisation/s and have received an invitation to apply from the department.
Eligible Organisation/s
Melanoma Institute Australia (MIA) is the leading national network of melanoma researchers and clinicians and is best placed to progress this work. MIA is the world’s leading centre for research, treatment, and education of melanoma, and has been driving national discussion on the feasibility of skin cancer screening for some time.
MIA will be contractually required to consult and collaborate with Cancer Australia, and other stakeholders, including the Melanoma and Skin Cancer Clinical Trials Group and Primary Care Collaborative Cancer Clinical Trials Group, clinicians, researchers and consumers, primary health networks and states and territories. This will ensure outcomes are supported by the broader sector and align with implementation of the Australian Cancer Plan and where appropriate, the Population Based Screening Framework.
