The Pormpuraaw Consultation Aboriginal Lands and Water IPA will consult with Traditional Owners, neighbouring land owners and statutory land management authorities to develop an IPA proposal.  

A Plan of Management and associated MERI framework will be developed for the proposed IPA in accordance with the ‘Our Country our Way: Guidelines 2016’ for Australian IPA Management Plans and in accordance with the protected area management categories outlined by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). 

The consultations will inform Traditional Owners and other relevant stakeholders about the long-term environmental and cultural heritage management of the Pormpuraaw Deed of Grant in Trust (DOGIT) area of Western Cape York Peninsula (majority of the Northern Holroyd Plain Aggregation and northern most intake of the Great Artesian Basin) and saltwater country (580km2) extending over 100kms of the Gulf of Carpentaria coastal zone and adjacent State coastal waters. These consultations with relevant stakeholders will support a decision on whether the area should be dedicated as an IPA.
