PBS Program Name:
DCCEEW 22/23 Regional Hydrogen Hubs Program
Grant Program:
Activating a Regional Hydrogen Industry
Grant Activity:
Pilbara Hydrogen Hub
Purpose:
The Pilbara is a globally significant resources region and future demand for renewable energy and hydrogen is strong. The Pilbara Hydrogen Hub will be a region where various producers and users of hydrogen, across industrial and energy markets, are co-located and development of the Hub represents an important step towards WA becoming a global centre to produce and export hydrogen at scale.
The Grant Agreement covers activities around Karratha and Port Hedland:
• Part A - A proposed hydrogen or ammonia pipeline connecting Maitland Strategic Industrial Area to the Burrup Peninsula;
• Part B - A Clean Energy Training and Research Institute to provide job-ready training locally within the Pilbara;
• Part C - Road and intersection infrastructure associated with the port, at Lumsden Point in Port Hedland; and
• Part D - Hub expansion studies across the Pilbara to guide the next steps.
The development of Hub will play a crucial role in positioning Western Australia in the global hydrogen economy, bringing forth regional economic diversification and growth, reduced carbon emissions and investment opportunities.
The project recognises the important role that Aboriginal people have in the successful delivery of the Hub. This collaboration is vital in understanding the land, protecting cultural heritage, developing appropriate industries in sensitive environments and leverage ongoing economic opportunities for Aboriginal people for generations to come.
