Sydney and Tokyo Waterfronts in an Age of Global Warming
The aims of the research project are to coordinate a series of virtual joint design studios between UNSW Sydney and Waseda University in Tokyo and organize an international symposium on the common theme of waterfront regeneration. Both the joint design studios and the symposium are intended to foster knowledge exchange and share different approaches while producing basic and applied research outcomes and interpreting the challenges and opportunities that waterfront cities face in a period of climate change. The remote joint design studios will run in parallel between Australia and Japan from December 2021 to August 2023. Reviewing case studies from Sydney and Tokyo, we will explore urban design strategies that address infrastructure improvement and disaster mitigation caused by the sea level rise/flooding risks while utilizing this environmental threat as an opportunity to bring back waterfront to residents and raise their awareness towards climate change. In parallel to the joint design studios this project intends to organize a 1-day international on-line symposium (webinar) in November 2022 with the participation of high-profile scholars, practitioners and academics from Australia, Japan and overseas. And edited book collecting selected students works and the papers presented at the symposium will summarize the outcomes of the research.
