Grant Activity:
Preclinical evaluation of a streptococcal peptide based specific diagnostic for rheumatic fever and the identification of proteins responsible for the pathogenesis of rheumatic heart disease
Purpose:
Rheumatic Heart Disease (RHD) is the commonest heart disease in children and young adults. While efforts have been made to control Strep infections that lead to RHD they are ineffective as NO SPECIFIC TEST for timely diagnosis is available. We have identified immune antibodies produced in RHD that can help the development of a new cost effective SPECIFIC test. During this project we will also identify the pathways that lead to heart damage and train and mentor three Indigenous Research Cadets.
