Grant Activity:
Retinal stem cell therapy in the immunoprivileged eye
Purpose:
Approximately 1.3 million Australians above the age of 50 show clinical evidence of age-related macular degeneration (AMD). Treatment options are limited and only partially effective, and 17 percent of current patients will suffer loss of vision or blindness, due to the death of photoreceptor cells in the retina. We aim to generate retinal pigment epithelial cells from stem cells and safely transplant them into the eye, to halt or reverse vision loss by preventing the death of photoreceptor cells.
