Grant Activity:
Understanding parasite ubiquitination to generate novel antimalarials
Purpose:
Malaria remains the most serious and widespread parasitic disease in humans. As parasites show increasing resistance to the frontline treatments, we need potent antimalarial drugs with new modes of action. My project proposes a new method of drug treatment that can be adapted to specifically target parasites. I will initially identify and then activate parasite protein complexes known the E3 ubiquitin ligases, using drugs known as PROTACs, to ultimately degrade key parasite proteins.
