Purpose:
The proposed project is on the coastal floodplain of a tidal creek estuary in northern Queensland in the Great Barrier Reef catchments. At approximately 300 hectares and located close to the nearby estuary, the project area is the lowest lying part of a significantly larger working property. The property is currently utilised for cattle grazing, with some areas under cultivation. The blue carbon project proposes to restore this currently freshwater agricultural area to a pristine estuarine wetland comprising a mosaic of mangroves, salt couch, salt pan and supratidal forest by reintroducing tide to the area. A blue carbon project would provide the opportunity to diversify farm revenues through the generation and sale of blue carbon credits, with the remaining farm areas operating on a business as usual basis.
