Mid-Career Industry Fellowships
Grant Activity:
Smoldering coarse woody debris and air quality
Purpose:
This project aims to develop and translate the first continental-scale tool to address the dynamics of coarse woody debris (CWD: logs, branches and stumps), which are a major source of smoke and fine particle emissions from smouldering combustion during fires. This will be achieved by establishing a spatially explicit, nation-wide dataset of CWD loads and then combining it with process-based biogeochemical modelling, and information on CWD combustion efficiency in relation to size, species and decay classes. The new tool will be used in the Australian Air Quality Forecasting System to deliver an early warning of smoke emissions risk during bushfires and prescribed burns for improved human health, economic and environmental benefits
