Grant Activity:
Harnessing genetics to halt the sneak thief of sight.
Purpose:
Glaucoma is the leading cause of irreversible blindness worldwide. In the early stages it is asymptomatic, and as such many people present at advanced stages of the disease when irreversible vision loss has already occurred. This research will reduce blindness and visual impairment from glaucoma through an improved prediction of high-risk individuals for developing glaucoma, and by the development of new therapies stemming from a better understanding of the molecular mechanisms of this disease.
