Grant Activity:
The Single Cell Basis for the Emergence of Drug Resistance during Azacitidine Therapy in Myelodysplastic Syndromes and Acute Myeloid Leukemia
Purpose:
Myelodysplasia and acute myeloid leukemia are blood cancers that arise in abnormal blood stem cells in the bone marrow. Azacitidine (AZA) is a drug that helps re-establish blood cell production in ~50% of patients. It is ineffective in the remainder. We will test whether AZA works in responders by improving the fitness of abnormal blood stem cells and their surrounding cells and modulating immune cells that help eliminate abnormal blood cells. This will guide drug discovery for non-responders.
