Forecast Opportunity View - Indigenous Rangers Program Expansion Round One

The Indigenous Rangers Program (IRP) is a successful and well-respected program that assists First Nations people to manage Country in accordance with Traditional Owners’ objectives, delivering a range of environmental, cultural, social and economic development outcomes.

The Australian Government is committed to an expansion of the IRP with funding available to double the number of Indigenous rangers to 3,800 by the end of the decade and work towards gender equality in ranger positions. 

The National Indigenous Australian Agency will deliver on the Government’s commitment by undertaking an open competitive grant opportunity. 

In addition to creating new jobs, funding priorities are:

a.Expanding the IRP footprint in places without Indigenous rangers, with regionally-based allocations.

b.Increasing the number of women Indigenous rangers.

c.Increasing Indigenous rangers on dedicated Indigenous Protected Areas.

d.Building the ability of ranger groups to become more self-sufficient through capacity building, strategic planning, asset purchases and career development, including youth pathways. 

This is the first open competitive opportunity for new organisations to join the IRP for more than 10 years. 

Round One will have up to $359 million available between 2024 and 2028.
